Movie Updates

So here’s what’s happening on the movie front:
Both Devil in the White City and In the Garden of Beasts have been optioned, Devil by Leonardo DiCaprio, and Beasts by Tom Hanks. These things move slowly. Last week I met the screenwriter assigned to Devil, Graham Moore, who assures me he’s going to do something fresh. I assured him that I didn’t really need to know–it’s his baby! I feel very strongly that once a writer makes the decision to allow his book to be adapted for film, he should back away and just stay out of it, and get on with his next book.

Which I thoroughly intend to do–once I figure out what that next book is going to be. And I may have done so. On the other hand, maybe not. As Jimmy Buffet said in one of his songs, “indecision may or may not be my problem.”
